Some people say that the latest update to googles search and seo rank priorites changes every few years. There could be some truth in this from my own experiances.

About two years ago i had a site at *1 in Google for its main keyword phrase for about nine months. The site was just full of content and not all original but not one backlink would you belive! quite a competitive market to. That same site all of a sudden fell out of favour and has never returned. Over the last year I would say that the sites I have had on google page one,  has been all backlink work over 1000 links gets you there and still there to this day. BUT recently one site which was nowhere to be seen in the rankings and had been the cause of the loss of one of my adwords accounts in the OCT 09 slap has reappeared at position 5. Also two other sites which had about 2 weeks quality seo work done have about 40 backlinks showing in yahoo are now on page one google something has changed for sure.

You could aslo check whether your keywords are becoming more or less popular with google labs and trends. You can research rising search volumes with keywords similar to the ones you are using and the relative amount of press coverage that these words are generating.

If your question is more to do with why your google rank has gone down it could be natural flucutation within the search engines or it could be something more.

If your targetted keywords are correct it could be that others have aggressively targetted these terms and now have more links. Try to counter this with more relevant links of your own. Use Yahoo site explorer to see what links the other sites around you have and see if you can gain some of them. You could also submit to press releases to PR sites to gain more links.

Also look at your content. Maybe look to see if you can use your keywords more in the pages. Label alt text and image files correctly with descriptions of what you are showing using your keywords. Its also an oppertunity to use words that your brand guidelines may not allow e.g. cheap lingerie.

You could also filter your page rank more towards the relevant pages with more links from your homepage.
